http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/downloads/pdf/materials/ChecklistFlyer.pdf has no big surprises on what you can recycle, but it's good to know that you cannot recycle plastic things like caps & lids, cups, wrap, bags, yogurt containers, deli/salad bar containers, or paper (chinese) take-out containers. I think I've been cheating with caps for a while.

I like to content myself with the knowledge that recycling restrictions vary by county while remaining blissfully ignorant of my county's restrictions. I happily recycle everything.
I don't think they vary that much. In particular, I think that plastic types 1 and 2 are the only ones, pretty much worldwide. "Recycling" yogurt containers might hurt more than it helps.
